Urgent Care Center and New Housing Coming to Former Braddock Hospital Site

(05/03/2012) - After the demolition of the Braddock Hospital buildings, local community leaders worked with Allegheny County and Pennsylvania representatives on redevelopment plans for the site. An emphasis was placed on establishing a medical facility in the community.

In April 2012 it was announced that a collaboration between Highmark Inc. and MedExpress would open a one-of-a-kind Urgent Care Center in Braddock by the summer of 2013. MedExpress will offer a level of emergency care from 9:00 a.m. until 9:00 p.m. and will be able to see individuals with all kinds of illnesses and injuries including minor injuries, including minor surgeries, taking care of broken bones, lacerations and stitches and sports physicals. MedExpress, based in Morgantown, West Virginia, operates 79 similar facilities.

The new facility will be part of a $20 million redevelopment that will include 30,000 square feet of flexible office space, 24 units of rental housing, 11 single family homes and a 20,000 square foot community park.

For the housing component of the project, master developer Trek Development in April secured $856,845 in tax credits from the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency for the housing development named The Overlook.

Construction on the commercial building, with MedExpress to be an anchor tenant, is to begin this summer. Work on the housing portion is scheduled to begin in the fall of 2012 and to be completed by late 2013.
